Cat pillows – Oscar is gone but his memory lives on

catpillows
I made these yesterday — the black cat is on its way to April in Maryland and the grey cat, to Danielle in Pennsylvania.

I started making these stuffed, faux fur cat shaped pillows in 2012, inspired by our much-loved black Persian cat, Oscar.

Since then I’ve sold countless versions of the elle Vintage Cat Pillows, in black, white, greys, grey and white, pinks, blue, red, browns and leopard prints. See them all here.

greycatpillowSome of the versions I’ve created and still stock, are the result of custom order requests. ย A few years ago, a customer emailed me and asked me to make a grey cat pillow, with a fluffy white belly, to look like her cat. I made it for her and she loved it, so I made more and listed it. It’s now my third most popular cat pillow, after black and white.

Might its appeal haveย something to do with the coincidentally similar Totoro character?

I’m often asked, “Where are the eyes?” Well, they don’t have any because they aren’t stuffed animals — they are actually functional, practical and remarkably comfortable, what are essentially 10″ x 18″ pillows. They measure about 25″ in full length with the fluffy, stuffed tail.

Cat lovers and children love them. They really look like actual cats, nestled on the couch, adding interest and whimsy to the living room decor, or as a fun bed pillow in the bedroom.

Many of my customers have purchased one because it reminds them their lost cat and so they can be very comforting. Our dear Oscar is no longer with us, but each and every time I make a fluffy black cat pillow, I pause to remember him and how much we loved and miss him. It’s a nice feeling.

Coyote Willie – Real fur? …nope..

IMG_9951I got this faux fur from Liliana in Ottawa. She sourced it from France, to make faux fur throws and blankets for her customers. Now she has retired, and I was lucky enough to find her on the world wide web and score this incredible fabric.

It’s so realistic in every way; its weight, level of plushness, silkiness, moveability, and as you can see –sight — so many lengths, textures and so much color detail.

This faux fur also makes incredibly realistic, soft, blow-in-the-wind pom poms and earmuffs.

I bought all Lilian had, so, sadly, when I run out of it, there will be no more — get some now atย elle Vintage!

Ruby red Arita

Usually, when I finish a project or event, it’s clean-up and reorganization time. It’s sO great to put scraps of fur away and fill up a vacuum cleaner bag with clippings, threads and furballs. Order and sanity restored!

In theory i suppose. Usually I get stopped by something. In this case, I got stopped by this gorgeous red faux fox fur sitting on the table — I had used some of it last week to make some pom key charms for the market. When I picked it up to put it away..hm…teddy bear! And so, here is Arita.

She’s irresistible.

..but now I have more of a mess to clean up. Honestly, one of these days I will take a break.
